taverns have been the social gathering spots and all the news passed from these family owned businesses. The City Tavern in Philadelphia was the social and business center of the new United States. Jefferson, Adams,Franklin and Paul Revere all met there. In fact, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were born there. Thomas Jefferson set up “Virginia’s Committee of Correspondence” in the Raleigh Tavern at Williamsburg and this tavern was the meeting site of the Virginia Burgesses, who called for a Continental Congress. Captain John Parker’s Minutemen waited at Buckham’sTavern for the approach of British troops on April 19th, 1775 at Lexington. The first Marine in the War of Independence was recruited in the Tun Tavern in Philadelphia. George Washington gave his farewell address to the officers of the Continental Army at the Queen’s Head Tavern and Gadsby’s Tavern in Alexandria was his ‘neighborhood tavern.’ President Abraham Lincoln is said to have operated a tavern early in his life. He and his wife, Mary Todd, were living in a room at the Globe Tavern, when their first child, Robert, was born.
